Ceiling Fan Summer Winter Airflow Guide
Which direction your ceiling fan should spin in summer vs. winter to save energy.
Summer setting: spin counterclockwise (when viewed from below) to push air straight down and create a wind-chill cooling effect that makes the room feel cooler.
Winter setting: spin clockwise on low speed to gently pull cool air up and push the warm air trapped at the ceiling back down along the walls.
To change direction, use the small slide switch on the motor housing of the fan — usually found just below the blades.
Summer tip: run the fan at medium or high speed. You must be in the room to feel the benefit — the fan cools people, not the air.
Winter tip: use the lowest speed setting so air circulates without creating a chilling draft.
Running the fan correctly in winter can reduce heating costs by recirculating warm air that naturally rises and collects near the ceiling.
