Electric Panel Replacement Checklist

A step-by-step checklist for safely replacing your home's electrical panel.

  • 5 real signs your panel may need to be replaced: buzzing or hissing sounds near the breaker box; frequent random power loss in parts of the house; warm or discolored breakers or nearby outlets; breakers tripping even under small loads; a panel that is outdated or no longer code-compliant (especially pre-1980s).

  • Ask before agreeing to any work: Are you testing the system or guessing by visual inspection alone?

  • Ask: Will you pull permits and schedule an inspection with the local authority?

  • Ask: Does your quote include AFCI/GFCI compliant breakers as required by current code?

  • Ask: Will the panel be properly grounded and bonded?

  • Ask: Is this a complete quote, or are surprise charges likely after the work begins?

  • Remember: just because a panel is old does not mean the entire house needs rewiring. Slow down, ask good questions, and trust your instincts more than high-pressure sales tactics.
