Fractionated Coconut Oil
What fractionated coconut oil is, how it differs from solid coconut oil, and when to use each.
Fractionated Coconut Oil is made by removing long-chain fatty acids from coconut oil, leaving only medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) — mostly caprylic and capric acid, not lauric acid. It stays liquid at all temperatures.
Benefits: Lighter feel, doesn't clog pores, odorless, longer shelf life. Best for: carrier oil in essential oil blends, massage oil, skincare, hair treatments.
Solid (Virgin or Unrefined) Coconut Oil: Made from cold-pressed raw coconut meat. Contains both long-chain and medium-chain fatty acids including lauric acid. Melts at about 76°F. Lauric acid gives it strong antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties — great for oral health, healing salves, and cooking. Best for: toothpaste, skin healing, oil pulling, baking.
Summary: Use fractionated coconut oil for topical essential oil blends. Use solid coconut oil for oral care because of the lauric acid, which fights bacteria like Streptococcus mutans.
How to Use
- 1Use fractionated coconut oil as the carrier oil in essential oil roller bottles and massage blends.
- 2Use solid (virgin) coconut oil for oil pulling, toothpaste, and skin healing salves.
- 3Apply fractionated coconut oil to skin or hair as a lightweight moisturizer.
